Basic Beekeeping Course at Mayland

If you are interested in learning the basics of beekeeping, Mayland Community College in Spruce Pine will be offering a Basic Beekeeping Course on Thursdays from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm beginning on Thursday, February 2 and continuing each Thursday through March 23rd (24 hours total).  The cost is $70.00.  Rick Harty, President of the ToeCane Beekeepers Association, will be the instructor. To register, please call Mayland Community College at 828-766-1298.  Students will learn:

  • the history and biology of the honeybee,
  • how to start a hive using a variety of equipment,
  • the relationship between the honeybee and agriculture,
  • how to use and sell products from the hive, and
  • the threats to a honeybee colony, which include parasites, disease, and Colony Collapse Disorder.

The course will conclude with a visit to the Harty Farm Bee Yard for a hands-on hive experience.
