When it comes to choosing a corn variety, utilizing yield alone as criteria for selection is not sufficient. Varietal performance will vary greatly according to management style, climatic factors, and soil type. Regrettably, there is an abundance of data, test results, marketing data, and field trial comparisons making the choice confusing. Fortunately, NC State Extension has created an interactive web platform that will allow one to enter management and agronomic considerations as criteria for searches to provide detailed information. Search queries for yield, traits, soil types, planting dates, regional data, maturity groups, consistency in performance, plant growth characteristics, herbicidal/insecticidal traits, test weights, and much more can be used to find appropriate varieties.

To partially demonstrate this web platform, several scenarios have been selected. The information below outlines some of the criteria used for searches and a link provided showing the results. Each set of criteria was established with certain management styles, soil types, or conditions and is outlined in Table 1. Corn Variety Query Criteria and Results.

For those that prefer, use the Corn Query Criterial Table link below to open an interactive table with appropriate working links. For most, this link is probably simpler. Having thus said, if preferred, or you experience technical issues, use the short summaries below. These summaries contain some highlighted words to emphasis certain parameters chosen. A direct link will lead to the NC Official Variety test results for the criteria outlined.

Once results are visible within the web platform, further features may be used to provide additional information. As example, selecting “Top Yield Group” will provide the percentage of trails where this variety was within the top yielding varieties. As another example, selecting those you have interest within the left column will allow one to examine the specific details of each trial site, images, and links to company details. Simply realize that efforts continue to add data. As such, for some information sufficient data is not yet available but will be added as we progress.

This search is suitable for those looking for any maturity group that yields 170 bu/ac or greater even when heat stressed for on all soil types that are likely Mineral-Organic or Organic. (The assumption is that lower pH values represent these soil types. It does not relate to poorly managed mineral soils with low soil pH). Criteria 3

Criteria 4

This search is suitable for those looking for any maturity group that yields 190 bu/ac or greater even when heat stressed on all soil types that are likely Mineral-Organic or Organic. (The assumption is that lower pH values represent these soil types. It does not relate to poorly managed mineral soils with low soil pH). This search is suitable for those looking for a late maturing corn that yields 190 bu/ac or greater when planted so sandy soils with less than 2% HM and a CEC of 5 or less. Too, these varieties shows consistency in that there is at least two years of data. Criteria 8
