Although spring is near hay is still very much a necessity for our livestock for the next few months. Many farmers realize their inventory is low and there is not a lot of hay to be purchased to help alleviate that strain. The low inventory of this year and the cost of fertilizer going up in 2022, many farmers will be tempted to cut down on fertilizer.
This is all the more reason to soil sample your hay fields and pastures this spring as soon as possible. You may need lime which is more affordable then fertilizer. You may need fertilizer and this year with hay inventory short, improving your pastures and getting the most out of them as long as possible is highly recommended.
A soil report will tell you what you need on your farm instead of guessing and possibly wasting time and money. Fertilize your hay field this spring while grass is actively growing. Fertilize your pastures this fall for increase grazing longer into the cooler months.
Rotate those pastures as well! You’d be amazed how allowing your pastures or sections of your pastures to rest improves your grazing.
Remember many farmers will be tempted to skip or skimp on fertilizer this year. That means there will be less hay available. Start planning now to avoid major disruptions and desperation.
