N.C. Cooperative Extension of Yancey County will be providing a brand new opportunity for youth to learn about raising, feeding, housing, caring for, and showing livestock as part of the “Yancey 4-H Summer Fun” program. We will be conducting our first Yancey County 4-H Youth Livestock Showmanship Day Camp. This camp will feature 3 days for youth to learn about caring for and showing pigs, goats, and beef cattle. Youth participating in the camp will experience hands-on learning activities with actual animals: beef steers, market pigs, and market goats. Day camp activities will be led by volunteer leaders experienced in livestock production and showmanship.
This day camp is open to any youth ages 7-18, as of January 1, 2022. Animals and supplies will be provided for youth participating in this camp, and youth do not have to have any experience showing livestock to participate. This opportunity will be offered with assistance from the Yancey County 4-H Livestock Club and the Yancey County 4-H Beef Club, but youth participants do not have to be a member of either club to participate in the camp. Those participating in the camp do have to enroll as member of Yancey County 4-H if they are not enrolled already.
This camp is a great way for any youth participant that may have previously considered a 4-H livestock showmanship project in the past, or that might be considering a livestock project in the future to learn more about what is involved in raising and showing livestock. Participating in the camp is also a great way for parents of youth interested in livestock showmanship projects to learn more about is involved with completing them as well. Parents are not required to, but are welcome to attend the camp.
The Yancey County 4-H Summer Fun Youth Livestock Showmanship Camp will be conducted July 26-28, 2022 at the former Clearmont Elementary School grounds (located at 1175 Clearmont School Rd.). Parents will need to plan to drop off, and pick-up youth participants at the Day Camp location. The camp will begin at 8:30 a.m. and last until 1 p.m. each day. The cost to attend all 3 days of camp is only $10 per youth participant. A sack lunch will be provided for each youth participant at the end of each day. The deadline to register for this day camp is June 10, 2022.
