The 4-H Fire Safety Program is offered to 4th graders throughtout Yancey County each fall. This is a six hour program and is taught by local volunteer firefighters. Teachers assist by doing some preliminary groundwork with students and do follow-up to help students process the information for future use. Subject matter includes Chemistry of Fire, Classses of Fire, Fire Extinguishers, Identifying Common Fire Hazards, Developing a Fire Escape Plan, Heat and Smoke Detectors and Alternate Heat Sources. 4-H supplies student books and poster board for the poster contest and completion certificates.
