2018 Livestock Kick-Off Meeting with a MEAL!
This will be a planning meeting for the 2018 program. Michelle will be updating the participants on what is to come in the new year related to livestock and to meet the new Extension Livestock Specialist.

Mrs. Deidre Harmon, the NC State Western Region Livestock Specialist will be attending also to introduce herself and present on winter feeding strategies and calving season feeding. We will also be discussing the meetings/workshops that will be held throughout the 2018 year.

I would like to get all of your suggestions for new/needed workshops/articles.

This workshop will be held at Shady Lane Farm, a commercial apple orchard located off Arbuckle Road in the Newdale Community. Participants will learn about and see an actual demonstration of proper pruning and training techniques for apple trees. These skills are applicable to both commercial and backyard orchards. This workshop will be held outside , so dress accordingly. Pruning and training techniques for other fruit species may also be discussed.

This workshop is designed to give participants a basic understanding of how to graft a tree (primarily apple trees). Attendees will learn several different grafting techniques as well as how to collect proper scions (cuttings). Scionwood from a number of different apple varieties will be available; however, anyone is welcome to bring his or her own scions to the workshop where they will get the opportunity to graft their own trees. Each person will receive two semi-dwarf rootstocks and will have the opportunity to purchase a limited number of additional rootstock. The cost is $10.00 per person.
