There is nothing better than growing your own apples, peaches, pears, plums, cherries, or other tree fruit. However, successfully growing fruit trees and producing fruit can be quite challenging. N.C. Cooperative Extension of Yancey County is hosting the class "Caring for your Home Orchard" to help those that would like to produce fruit from their fruit trees with success. This class will cover recommended practices for growing tree fruit. We will cover practices recommended for establishing fruit trees, caring for trees in the first year, and practices recommended for maintaining trees in the 2nd year and beyond. Specific topics covered will include recommended pruning practices, identifying and managing both disease and insect pests with minimal spraying, pruning, trellising trees and more.
Although this class will be focused toward home orchardists, it will also be good for farmers wanting to start a small scale orchard focused toward direct from farm, or farmers market sales. If you would like to know more about this class, or to register, please contact David Davis (david_davis@ncsu.edu) or call the N.C. Cooperative Extension Yancey County Center at (828) 682-6186.
