In honor of Fire Safety Month, let’s talk about staying warm—safely.

As temperatures drop, many of us turn to wood stoves, propane heaters, kerosene, or generators to stay comfortable. But not all fuels are created equal, and not every setup is safe for every situation. This month’s Preparedness in Practice class will walk you through how to store, handle, and operate fuels safely to reduce fire and carbon monoxide risks during the winter season.

We’ll cover:

      • Fuel storage safety — gasoline, diesel, propane, and kerosene basics

      • Proper ventilation for space heaters and generators

      • Identifying and preventing carbon monoxide hazards

      • Winter heating options during power outages

      • When to call for help and what to do before responders arrive

🔥 Special guest: A local Yancey County Fire Chief will join us to demonstrate safe practices, share real-life stories, and answer your heating safety questions.
