It’s that time again, not Valentine’s Day or tax time, but for Super Bowl LVII. As the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Philadelphia Eagles, the most important thing (other than the game itself) is the food.
The Super Bowl is the number one event for snack consumption. Many Americans put more effort into their Super Bowl parties than they do major holidays! According to recent data from Instacart, chips are the number one snack, followed by wings, beer, and frozen pizza. Hummus and veggie trays were at the bottom of the list as the worst snacks to bring.
You want to avoid having your New Year’s resolutions derailed by the biggest snacking event of the season, but you also don’t want to show up with hummus and veggies. Now you are in a predicament. For an entire month, you’ve watched your intake and adjusted ingredients, and you don’t want to end up on the couch nibbling the celery on the side of the wing basket that no one else wants to eat.
Most of our favorite snacks and appetizers contain empty calories and have little nutritional value. As with the game, you want to score big on your snacks. Changing ingredients and preparation methods can add protein, healthy fat, and extra flavor to traditional game-time foods. Easy suggestions are:
- Use an oven or air fryer instead of deep-frying.
- Substitute plain greek yogurt for cheese or sour cream.
- Choose swiss or mozzarella cheese over American. American cheese is loaded with sodium and is highly processed.
- Swap white grains for whole grains. Whole grains are beneficial for heart health and increase fiber intake.
- Opt for salsas over cheese dips. Three tablespoons of restaurant-style queso have approximately 18g of fat, 225 calories, 40% of your daily sodium, and 12g of protein. On the other hand, three tablespoons of salsa contain no fat, 15 calories, 10% of your daily sodium, and no protein.
- If tortillas are required, go for a high-fiber option (often marketed as a low-carb tortilla). The taste is no different than a traditional flour tortilla, and you get almost an entire day’s worth of fiber in one serving.
