Participants of Leadership Yancey County 2024 learned about many different aspects of local agriculture including livestock production.

Agriculture has always been important to Yancey County! Although, agriculture today looks quite different than it used to 5-10 years ago, it is still very important today as well. N.C. Cooperative Extension of Yancey County recently had an opportunity to teach current and future leaders in Yancey County about the importance of agriculture, and share a little of what modern day agriculture in Yancey County looks like as part of the 2024 Leadership Yancey County  Ag Day.

Leadership Yancey County is a cooperative effort by the Burnsville-Yancey County Chamber of Commerce, and Yancey County Economic Development. This program teaches participants about everything Yancey County has to offer. It is a seven month program with monthly class sessions that will equip future community leaders with knowledge and ability to take Yancey County into the future. Participants learn about education, industry, health & human services, small business, tourism, parks & recreation, agriculture, county and city government.

For the 2024 Leadership Yancey County Ag Day, we visited several farms in Yancey County.

  • We first visited River Oak Farm where participants learned about livestock production in the county and conservation efforts. River Oak Farm is owned and operated by Roger Young. Roger produces beef cattle, primarily grass finished beef. The farm is also known for its conservation efforts implementing silvopasture, rotational grazing, and many other soil, land and water conservation focused management practices.
  • Our 2nd farm stop for the Ag Day was Maple N More Nursery. Maple N More is a premiere nursery producer of Japanese Maples and other landscape plants. Horace and Lisa Williams are the owners and operators. Participants learned about the history of the farming operation and all that the farm has to offer.
  • The 3rd farm stop was Seven Seeds Farm. Seven Seeds Farm is a vegetable farm that primarily utilizes organic growing practices. They market their produce through TRACTOR and farmers markets. They were also a 2024 recipient of the WNC Ag Options Grant in Yancey County.
  • The last farm stop for the day was Carolina Native Nursery. Carolina Native Nursery is known for their production of Azaleas, Rhododendrons, Mt. Laurel, and many other native plants. In addition to offering sales of plants with their on farm retail location, they market plants all up and down the east coast.
  • Throughout the day, Leadership Yancey Ag Day participants also learned about the value and mission of N.C. Cooperative Extension in Yancey County. They learned how Extension makes a difference in the lives of many in Yancey County. From youth to adult, farmers, home owners, business owners, and more, participants learned that N.C. Cooperative Extension of Yancey County is a great resource for the local community. Participants learned about the Yancey County 4-H & Youth Development, Family & Consumer Sciences, Agriculture, and Home and Consumer Horticulture Programs.

N.C. Cooperative Extension of Yancey County was glad to offer this opportunity for participants to learn about agriculture in the local community.
