Did you know that the North Carolina Department of Agriculture offers hay testing services to farmers. For $10 per sample, farmers can get a basic nutrient analysis back for their hay samples. A hay test indicates the quality of the hay, and can be used to plan winter feeding strategies considering the management practices implemented on each individual farm. N.C. Cooperative Extension in Yancey County can assist farmers by helping to interpret hay tests results, gain an understanding of each farmers’ goals and management practices, and help each farmer develop an individualized feeding plan for hay fed to livestock. It is a valuable service that many hay producers in the county do not take advantage of, and we want to change that!

This fall, N.C. Cooperative Extension in Yancey County has a great opportunity. We have a limited amount of funding available to cover hay testing for farmers that harvested hay in Yancey County. We hope to not only promote the benefits of hay testing in this program, but also would like to get an idea of the overall quality of hay produced in Yancey County.

Here are the general requirements for participation in this program:

  • Hay to be tested in this program must have been harvested from fields located in Yancey County.
  • Hay harvested outside of Yancey County will not be eligible for this program even if that hay was harvested by a Yancey County farmer due to requirements of the funding sponsors. N.C. Cooperative Extension of Yancey County will still assist in taking samples of hay not harvested in Yancey County, but the cost of testing ($10 per sample) will be the responsibility of those farmers.
  • All packages of hay can be tested (round bales, square bales, wrapped hay, haylege, ect.). Ensiled hay should not be sampled until at least 21 days post harvest.
  • Farmers must be able to provide some information about the hay being tested such as approximate time harvested, farm location from which hay was harvested, and expected composition of the hay (grass hay, grass/legume hay, legume hay, etc.).
  • N.C. Cooperative Extension of Yancey County will assist with taking hay samples for farmers by appointment, and farmers will need to be present when samples are taken.
  • Hay samples will be taken beginning September 3 on a first come, first serve basis. Samples will be taken until available funding is exhausted.
  • There is no limit to the number of lots that can be tested for each farm.

Those that would like to know more about this program, or that would like to sign up to have their hay tested can contact Yancey County Agriculture Extension Agent David Davis (david_davis@ncsu.edu), or call the N.C. Cooperative Extension Yancey County at (828) 682-6186.
