National Rural Health Day

National Rural Health Day, held every year on the third Thursday in November, celebrates the strength and resilience of rural communities while highlighting their unique health challenges. It’s a day to recognize the importance of improving access to care, promoting wellness, and addressing the health needs of people living in rural areas.

N.C. Cooperative Extension offers programs that empower individuals and families to take charge of their health, ease the burden on healthcare providers, and create stronger, healthier communities. In 2025, we’re hoping to get several of these classes going, so get those New Year’s resolutions ready, and bookmark our calendar of events to stay updated on class offerings!

Share your thoughts by answering these five simple questions!

Supporting Health Through Education
Chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease are common in rural areas, but they don’t have to be. We offer simple, practical programs that teach people how to eat better, stay active, and manage their health effectively.

  • MED Instead of Meds (ages 18+)
  • Healthy for Life (from the American Heart Association, ages 18+)
  • Take Control (ages 18+)
  • Faithful Families (ages 18+)
  • Kid’s Club (ages 7-11)
  • Color Me Healthy (Pre-K/Kindergarten)

Cooking Confidence for Healthier Eating
Cooking at home is one of the best ways to eat healthier and save money, but not everyone feels confident in the kitchen. Our cooking classes and demos teach easy techniques for making tasty, nutritious meals that fit your budget and lifestyle.

  • Cooking Local Foods
  • Mini Lessons on topics such as: Cooking with Microwaves, Roasting, Stir Fry, Dressings and Marinades, Freezing, Adapting Recipes, Knife Skills, Using Ripe Fruits & Vegetables, Eating with the Seasons, Spices and Seasonings, Storage & Shelf Life, and Cooking with Venison.

Connecting to Local Resources
We help people find and use local resources, like farmers’ markets, food pantries, and community gardens. These connections make accessing fresh, local food more accessible, stay active, and get involved in your community.

  • Farm to School Programs
  • Community Garden Establishment
  • Recipes using in-season ingredients
  • Learn, Grow, Eat, Go! (Pre-K)

Building Healthier Communities
By working with local healthcare providers, schools, and community groups, we help create programs that promote wellness and make it easier for everyone to live healthier lives.

For more information about our health programs for youth and adults, we invite you to visit our office. If your agency is involved in promoting community health and you’re interested in partnering to offer a program, please reach out to FCS Agent Niki Maness at niki_maness@ncsu.edu or call (828) 682-6186. We look forward to working together to make a positive impact!

Together, we can make rural communities stronger and healthier!
