Floods and landslides which occurred during and since Hurricane Helene not only moved soil, water, and man-made debris; but also moved many unwanted seeds, sprigs, and other plant parts that could result in future problems for property owners in Yancey County. The storm may have resulted in the establishment several different invasive weed species that landowners will have to contend with on their property in the upcoming growing season. Prior to the onset of winter weather following the storm, many property owners have already seen many newly established invasive and nuisance weeds on their properties. Winter weather may have made these disappear for a short time, but they will most likely be seen again in the upcoming months. Early season management is the key to keeping the upper hand on many different species of invasive and nuisance weeds. So it is important that landowners impacted by Helene be able to identify potential problem weeds, and take steps early in their growing cycle to management them.
N.C. Cooperative Extension is conducting an early spring workshop, “Managing Invasive and Nuisance Weeds” to help landowners be able to identify some of the main weeds of concern, and help them know how potential ways to manage them. This workshop will be highly focused to livestock or crop producers, but relevant information will also be covered for landscapers and other types of land managers. We have applied to offer pesticide credits (X, O, D, L, and N) to participants which attend this workshop.
The workshop is offered at no charge and will be held on Thursday, March 11 starting at 6 p.m. at the Yancey County Senior Center. The Senior Center is located at 503 Medical Campus Dr. in Burnsville. Those planning to attend can RSVP by contacting David Davis (david_davis@ncsu.edu) or by calling the N.C. Cooperative Extension Yancey County Center at (828) 682-6186.
