Cows Grazing in a field

We will be having a beef production field day on Saturday, September 20, starting at 10 a.m. at River Oak Farm. River Oak Farm is commercial cow/calf operation owned and operated by Roger Young, and is located at 314 Wyatt Town Rd. in Burnsville.

River Oak Farm has shifted focus in recent years toward maximizing the use of rotational grazing. The farm has also implemented several soil and water conservation projects in recent years. After being impacted by Hurricane Helene, River Oak Farm hosted several demonstration efforts including the use of annual forage grasses to maximize grazing opportunities following the storm, the use of drones to establish annual forage crops and frost-seeding clover, and will be restoring perennial cool season grasses this fall. The field day will feature these efforts.

Topics that may be covered at the field day will include:

  • Demonstration of Using Agricultural Drones to Sow Forage Crops and Apply Fertilizer to Pastures and Hayfields
  • Optimizing Rotational Grazing Using Winter Stockpiled Pastures
  • Incorporating Annual Forage Crops into Mountain Beef Production Grazing Practices
  • Demonstration of Using Agricultural Drones to Manage Weeds in Pastures and Hayfields
  • Cost Share Programs for Beef Producers

Lunch will be provided at the conclusion of the field day. To help us better prepare, if you plan to attend the field day, please register through eventbrite by going to go.ncsu.edu/yanceyext_beef, or by calling NC Cooperative Extension of Yancey County at (828) 682-6186.
