It is time to begin working on 2026 WNC Ag Options grant applications! WNC Ag Options works to build sustainable farming communities in our mountain region by providing resources to farmers who are diversifying or expanding
their farming operations. The ultimate goal of WNC Ag Options is to protect mountain farmland by assisting the longevity of farmer enterprises and encouraging groups of farmers to solve logistical challenges in local agricultural systems. Do you have a goal to further diversify or expand your farming business? Those receiving grants this year can receive a $10,000 grant with a required 10% match (total project cost must be at least $11,000). Here are the steps to apply:

  • (Optional, but recommended) Attend an informational session. There will be several sessions to choose from, but one of the closest sessions to our area will
be held at TRACTOR Food and Farms on September 9, 2025, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
  • Meet the Intent to Apply Deadline. By September 26, talk to your local N.C. Cooperative Extension Agent (David Davis or Adam McCurry) about the project you intend to apply for.
  • Complete and Submit your application by November 14, 2025. N.C. Cooperative Extension of Yancey County will assist you as you prepare your application.
  • Are you wondering what types of projects are eligible? Essentially, any improvement that can be made to the farm to diversify or expand production is applicable, but here are a few ideas from projects that were funded in the last grant cycle:
  • • Honey house Improvement
  • • Establishing a new blueberry crop production system on the farm
  • • Constructing a hay storage shed to minimize transport costs and maintain feed quality
  • • Purchasing and installing livestock handling equipment to increase labor and production efficiency on a beef farm
  • • More examples of previously funded projects can be found at the www.wncagoptions.org.
  • If you would like more information about the WNC Ag Options Program contact N.C. Cooperative Extension of Yancey County by calling (828) 682-6186.
