Almost 1 year ago, Hurricane Helene greatly impacted many pastures and hayfields throughout Yancey County. N.C. Cooperative Extension of Yancey County was able to secure a grant from CFWNC that assisted in the purchase of an agricultural drone, and we are able to purchase forage seed for those producers needing to restore pastures and hayfields.
This project initially had several goals. These included:
- assisting livestock and hay producers that were impactedby Hurricane Helene,
- provide and option for annual forage crops for thoseproducers that could not prepare fields in time for spring seeding
- Provide producers with improved forage seed varieties and diverse forage mixtures that included legumes (clover)
- Assist producers with re-seeding efforts by providing access to aerial drone services, and/or a no-till seed drill
- Restore pastures and hayfields following recommended Extension guidelines for establishment such as planting the right species at the right time, and applying nutrients according to soil test recommendations for the forages that were to be planted
To date through this project, N.C. Cooperative Extension of Yancey County has assisted producers in seeding:
- 119 acres of annual forage crops
- 122 acres of perennial forage crops
- 40 acres of clover
We are now in the early seeding window for fall seeding of perennial cool-season grasses and have already started seeding. NC State Extension, Crop Sciences has provided us with a no-till seed drill to help with these efforts. We will be contacting those producers that have signed up for seeding services, or that requested seed for fall seeding in the coming weeks.
We still have come additional funding to purchase more forage seed. If you area hay or livestock producer that had pastures or hayfields impacted by Hurricane Helene, we will be glad to assist you. This does not only include damages suffered from flooding or landslides, but also if you had pastures that were damaged due to overgrazing as a result of damaged fences. If you are in need of forage seed to restore your fields, please contact us at N.C. Cooperative Extension of Yancey County by calling (828) 682-6186 or contact David Davis (david_davis@ncsu.edu).
