The majority of mountain pastures are composed of Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue. Kentucky 31 is a very resilient forage, great for stabilizing soil on steep sloped, mountain pasture. It will persist tough conditions such as when pastures are overgrazed, or continuously grazed; where other forage grasses often do not persist. However, due to the endophyte that comes with it, KY 31 Tall Fescue has some known potentially negative impacts on the health and performance beef cattle when they graze it.
In recent years, there has been much research focused on managing livestock grazing KY 31. This research has resulted in the development of management strategies that, when implemented in the production of beef cattle grazing KY 31, have shown tremendous improvements to production and animal performance.
At our upcoming meeting, the new NC State Extension Beef Specialist, Dr. Benjamin Rajo will be joining Yancey County beef producers to share recommended management practices and strategies which will optimize beef cattle that are produced in Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue based grazing systems.
If you would like more information, or if you would like assistance registering for this upcoming program, please send an email to David Davis (david_davis@ncsu.edu), or call the N.C. Cooperative Extension Yancey County Center at (828) 682-6186.

Despite potential complications associated with Endophyte toxicity, Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue serves as one of the most widely utilized forages for beef cattle producers in WNC.
