Collapse ▲Be Prepared For The Storm!
As of the writing of this announcement on September 25, Yancey County is currently under the following weather related watches:
- A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued which means tropical storm-forced winds are possible somewhere within the area within the next 48 hours.
- A Flood Watch has been issued until September 27 at 2 p.m.
Please make sure to pay attention to watches and warnings, and it is important to take steps now to prepare for possible weather coming our way. This picture was from the last major storm event that took place in Yancey County. With the current forecast of very heavy rainfall amounts in the next few days, and possible tropical storm-forced winds somewhere in the area, we very well could see flooding and other storm related damage over the next few days. It is very important to take proper steps to prepare for this storm to move into the area.
Here are a few things that farmers should do to prepare before the storm:
- Take pictures of crops in their current condition before the storm. Take pictures with a time and date stamp if possible. If you do experience crop losses from the storm, having pictures on hand of your crops prior to the storm will enable you to take advantage of any programs associated with a farm related disaster declaration should one be declared.
- Harvest any portion of crops that are ready to be harvested before the rains arrive if possible.
- For crops that are not ready, make sure to record any information that might help you should your crop be heavily damaged by a weather disaster. For example, take moisture readings and yield estimations on corn, or take pictures of hayfields that are still left to be harvested.
- Livestock producers, make sure all livestock production related inventories are up to date and records are in order. In addition to herd or flock inventories, thing about recording the amount of hay or feed on hand, or other essential supplies.
- Move livestock to pastures located on higher ground, that are not subject to flooding.
- Make sure to have plenty of feed, hay, fuel or other supplies on hand should roads wash out, or supplies otherwise be inaccessible.
- Make sure to make preparations for yourself and for your family.
Should the storm hit our area:
- Keep yourself safe during the storm! Your life and well-being are much more valuable than any crops or livestock.
- Do not cross any flooded roadways. Remember that just because the road was there before flooding occurs, it does not mean that it is there during a flood. It only takes a few inches of water to move a car.
- Check on your neighbors regularly and look out for each other.
- Make sure that you have all of your personal necessities on hand to be as ready as you can (water, food, fuel, etc.).
- It is good to document storm damage to any crops, livestock, fences, or other infrastructure with time stamped photography when you can do so safely, but do not put yourself at risk to document storm damage.
- Should widespread flooding occur, stay at home. Don’t be clogging roadways to sight see. Stay connected to hear announcements from local authorities and pay attention to, and follow any instructions related to watches and warnings.
