June is the start of hurricane season. Although Yancey County isn’t on the coast, we still get strong storms, heavy rain, and power outages, especially during the summer and fall. That’s why now is the perfect time to make sure your family is ready.

N.C. Cooperative Extension of Yancey County is offering a free, hands-on class on Thursday, June 26, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Extension Office (30 E US Hwy 19E BYP, Burnsville). This class will help you build your own emergency kit and learn what you need to stay safe at home during storms, power outages, or other emergencies.

You’ll get tips on what to pack, how to store your supplies, and how to plan for your family’s special needs like medicine, pets, babies, or older adults. Everyone who comes will go home with helpful checklists and a better idea of what to do if a storm hits.

Even though it’s been almost a year since Tropical Storm Helene, now is not the time to get comfortable. That storm showed us just how quickly things can change. Roads washed out, homes were damaged, and many families were without power for days. Being prepared means you’re ready no matter what the season brings.

We’ll have light refreshments, and childcare will be available if you need it.

“You don’t have to wait until something bad happens,” says Niki Maness, the Family & Consumer Sciences Agent leading the class. “This class gives you the tools to be ready ahead of time so you don’t have to worry later.”

You must sign up ahead of time to attend, and space is limited. The last day to register is Wednesday, June 25 at 5:00 p.m.

To register or ask questions, contact Niki Maness at (828) 682-6186 or niki_maness@ncsu.edu. You can also scan the code below to register on our Google Form.
