Programs & Workshops

Yancey County Family & Consumer Sciences offers practical, research-based classes for youth, adults, families, food service workers, and community partners. Programs focus on food safety, nutrition, healthy living, parenting, emergency preparedness, and life skills.

Youth & In-School Enrichment

Our youth programs bring hands-on learning into classrooms and community settings. Topics may include:

  • Gardening, nutrition, and physical activity
  • Food safety and kitchen basics
  • Healthy cooking and meal planning
  • Family life and child development
  • Food entrepreneurship and workforce skills

Programs such as Learn, Grow, Eat, Go!, Color Me Healthy, school nutrition lessons, Foods and Nutrition classroom support, and youth Food Handler training help students build skills they can use at home, in school, and in future careers.

Adult & Community Programs

Adult workshops are designed to be practical, affordable, and useful for everyday life. Topics may include:

Programs may be offered at the Extension office, schools, community sites, partner agencies, or local events.

Cooking Demonstrations & Local Food Education

Through community partnerships and the mobile teaching kitchen, FCS programs also include cooking demonstrations featuring seasonal produce, simple recipes, food safety tips, and nutrition information. These demonstrations help families learn affordable ways to prepare and enjoy local foods.
